And that is why you shouldn’t suppress your emotions. Giant monsters breaking out isn’t a good thing.

I COMPLETELY agree. Suppressing emotions is terrible for the body and soul. And also, it leads to all sorts of self-destructive behaviors in an attempt to numb one’s self.

    • Hey sui, you are right and I’m glad you agree with me. It no only leads to self-destructive behaviors, it can even lead to physical illness if suppressing your emotions is an elongated process.

Thanks for the comment, I will reply to your e-mail soon!

  • This comic is cute AND deals well with a very serious topic.

While it can be helpful to suppress emotions for the SHORT-term (eg, in emergencies), hiding them away indefinitely can be extremely dangerous for our holistic well-being in the long run.

    Great lesson, Steven.

    • Exactly, I’m sure many people do it everyday. There is something that they don’t want to deal with, so they would go drink some alcohol and forget about their troubles.

But in the long-run, things will inevitably get worse and worse.

Although this post is sort of humorous, I do hope people understand the seriousness to this topic.

      Thanks for the comment Eirien.

  • And those bags aren’t ecologic anyway, so just let the feelings go, not everybody will like your emotions (or at least the fact that you’re letting them go), but it’s your life… :P

    Great cartoon,
    a new fan :)

    • Haha, you know I was thinking about drawing dirty left over bags inside the chamber to make an ecological reference…but I thought that would be too distracting.

Good thing you noticed that element in this post tho.

Thanks for the comment new fan and welcome! :D

  • Fantastic post, my friend. Perfect analogy.

That’s why that we shouldn’t seek to suppress negative emotions and instead seek to experience them fully. By ‘experience them fully’ I mean that you allow yourself to let the emotion affect you for as long as it wants, and just let go. A detached perspective on the emotion is the best thing to have, so you don’t end up clinging to it.

    • Hey Brett! You got it spot on. The longer we try to “avoid” and suppress our emotions, the longer they will stay within us and the bigger they will grow (As you may have seen from the post)

It’s a great ability for the brain to feel certain emotions, it is just part of the cycle of life. Accept life for what it is without much resistance is truly the way to go.

Thanks for sharing that philosophy Brett

    Stephen:

Wow, very cool post and illustration!! As someone who does not wear my emotions on my sleeve…I think this suppression is something I need to be aware of. You included some great information in an insightful and humorous manner.

    • Hey Tim! I know what you mean, I usually hide my emotions and always feel that something isn’t right with what I am doing. Which is why I’ve decided to create this post, because I know that keeping things to myself all the time and pretending that I don’t have problems is really a detrimental habit.

Thanks for the compliment and comment Tim, I appreciate it :)

  • YOU ARE SO CREATIVE!! I love how you draw and write your posts. This one was great and I got a very healthy laugh from it.

The message is also clear, especially in the last frame. I think I will not suppressing my emotions any time soon.

    Great post:~)

    • Hey Sara, thank you for the compliment lol.

I’m glad that you got the message, and yes don’t suppress your emotions or that giant monster is going to eat you up like what happened in the last frame.

PS: I think you’ve just made a great joke LOL – “The message is also clear, especially in the last frame” – when the last frame is blurred…hahahahahaha god i’m so lame.

Thanks for your comment Sara, appreciate it.

  • Hi Steven .. it’s a great way of passing on ideas as a two way learning process – the words and the visuals. I guess we could all do it with a computer program – sort of mind mapping? I can’t draw for love or money .. and at the moment the words aren’t coming out either!!

Negativity is so difficult to deal with .. I suffer with family negativity – and just seem to struggle to get round it .. I know it’s not good & understand that – 2010 I must beat the gremlin. I guess knowing keeps it up above the ‘deadly’ line – ??

Have a good 2010 – and I look forward to loads more bright stick like ideas! – tahnks

    • Hey Hilary, I can’t really draw either lol, I mean how could anyone be proud of their stick-figure drawings?? So if you got any visual ideas, I suggest you putting them out there. They are a great add of impression for the message that I’m trying to get across.

Negativity is very difficult to deal with, but sometimes negativity is just inevitable, and the only thing we could do with it is to not see it as too much of a problem in our lives.

Knowing it does keep you above the “deadly” line lol, as long as you have the awareness behind your emotions of your thoughts, then you are already one step ahead of many people.

I hope you have a great 2010 also! Thanks for always commenting, I appreciate the feedback. :)

  • Hi Steven.

    This is very true.

I have gone through this process and it was terrible. If I do it again it will be terrible again.

I have been in that 4th step and it is not enjoyable at all until it is over.

It usually starts with a little fear or worry, and then builds like a snowball.

    Very accurate representation.

    • Hey Armen, it’s good that you have the memory of your emotional suppression experiences, because then you’ll know how NOT to cope with stress and tough situations.

Hope you do well in 2010! Thanks for the feedback man.

  • Steven, you’re rocking the comic world!
I loved your final frame – OMG, so funny!

Well, I realize it’s *not* funny, but i can’t help but to think your artistry is helping to see the lighter side of things.

I hope all is well in your world – I’m sorry to be so late to your post!
I’ve been sending happy thoughts your way!

    • Hey Lori, haha I actually had a bit of conflict going on when I was drawing this. I knew that I was approaching a serious problem that may lead to many disordered lives with a sense of …kiddish comedic tone, but I thought “why so serious?” lol

I hope all is in your world too, and don’t worry about it, it’s always great to read your comment here. :)

  • Hey Steven, Yikes that giant monster got me all scared….eeekkk!!!
I swear to never ever ever never suppress my emotions again..now pls tell that scary monster not to come my way ;)
I so love how youre making your posts so illustrative. Your comic genius just shines through..
    Much Love,
    Z~

    • Hey Zeenat! Don’t worry, if that monster comes close to you my army of stick-figures will form a protective wall against it – they’d do anything for me when I have the eraser :) .

  • Hi Steven – thank you. Sadly – cannot draw for toffee – I have ideas! At the moment too many other things going on – so creativity as such isn’t easy – the brain is very saturated .. having had three people to think about, now two (Mum and I) that my uncle has died .. saps the energy. But ideas are bubbling under – drawing ugh ugh .. never have been able to – one skill of a few I’d love to have – but do other things!!

    Have a good weekend ..Hilary
